Full Job Description

The Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive nursing care to adult patients in a fast-paced inpatient medical-surgical environment at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC), the Department of Defense's largest inpatient hospital and Level I Trauma Center. The RN delivers safe, evidence-based patient care, coordinates interdisciplinary treatment plans, and promotes optimal patient outcomes while adhering to military healthcare standards, Joint Commission requirements, and established nursing practices. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The Medical-Surgical RN shall: Perform the full scope of professional nursing duties within granted clinical privileges and scope of practice. Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including physical, psychosocial, family, and medical histories. Develop, implement, evaluate, and document individualized nursing care plans. Provide direct patient care, including: Medication administration by oral, IV, intramuscular, subcutaneous, transdermal, and rectal routes. Wound care and dress changes. Patient hygiene and mobility assistance. Blood product administration according to established protocols. Monitor patient conditions and respond appropriately to changes in health status. Recognize and intervene in life-threatening situations using established emergency procedures. Perform diagnostic procedures including phlebotomy and point-of-care testing as authorized. Educate patients and families regarding disease processes, medications, discharge instructions, and health maintenance. Maintain accurate, timely, and complete documentation in the electronic medical record. Communicate effectively with physicians, advanced practice providers, ancillary staff, and interdisciplinary teams. Supervise and delegate appropriate tasks to Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs) and unlicensed assistive personnel. Adhere to infection prevention and control policies and patient safety standards. Operate and troubleshoot patient care equipment, including infusion pumps, monitoring systems, and other clinical devices. Participate in quality improvement initiatives, staff meetings, training, and professional development activities. Adapt to changing patient acuity, staffing needs, and workload demands. Float to other comparable patient care units as assigned and within competency level. Minimum Qualifications: Education Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred. Graduate of a nursing program accredited by ACEN or CCNE. Licensure Current, active, unrestricted Registered Nurse license from any U.S. state, territory, district, or jurisdiction. License must remain current throughout employment. Experience Minimum one (1) year of RN experience within the last two (2) years in an acute care inpatient setting. Certifications Required: Basic Life Support (BLS) Preferred or Unit-Specific: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Advanced Life Support (ALS) for designated Medical-Surgical specialty units. Additional certifications may be required based on assignmentKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong clinical assessment and critical-thinking skills. Knowledge of adult medical-surgical nursing principles and standards. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple patients in a dynamic environment. Effective oral and written communication skills. Proficiency in electronic health records and nursing documentation. Ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams. Strong customer service and patient advocacy skills. Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and HIPAA compliance. Physical Requirements Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move continuously during extended shifts. Ability to lift and move 25-50 pounds independently. Ability to assist with patient repositioning, transfers, and emergency procedures, including CPR. Work in an environment with potential exposure to infectious diseases and medical equipment-related hazards. Security and Compliance Requirements U.S. Citizenship required. Successful completion of required background investigation and security screening. Compliance with all facility credentialing requirements. Completion of required orientation and mandatory training programs. Maintenance of annual influenza vaccination and other required immunizations. Compliance with all Joint Commission, Defense Health Agency, and BAMC policies and procedures. Work Environment Brooke Army Medical Center is a 425-bed Academic Medical Center and the Department of Defense's only Level I Trauma Center. Nurses provide care in a highly collaborative environment supporting active-duty military personnel, veterans, military families, and other eligible beneficiaries. The facility operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and requires schedule flexibility to meet patient care demands.
